Why NetWorker often backs up bootstrap while backing up data?

Introduction

What is bootstrap?

Why bootstrap is backed up automatically?

Can we disable the Bootstrap Backup Failure notification?

Detailed Information

When we backup data, we can often see a save set called bootstrap being backed up immediately after data backup finishes.

What is Bootstrap?

Bootstrap is a save set containing all the information from the media database and the resource directory. It is automatically created during a server-initiated backup and is essential for NetWorker Server disaster recovery. If bootstrap is lost, you are probably not able to perform disaster recovery for NetWorker Server.

NetWorker backs up bootstrap at least once every 24 hours. After backing up bootstrap, NetWorker will generate a bootstrap report automatically and by default, the bootstrap report is sent via email to the default email recipient (either the administrator or root). We can also configure it to print the report. If it fails to print, the message of the report will be recorded in the savegrp.log.

What’s the usage of the bootstrap report?

We know that bootstrap is backed up at least once every 24 hours, however, not all these bootstraps will be backed up to the same tape. They will probably be stored in multiple tapes in the pool. If we want to perform disaster recovery for NetWorker Server and restore the state of the latest backup, we need to find out where the latest bootstrap was backed up. The bootstrap report records which tape a bootstrap is saved to. Once we get the bootstrap report, we can easily know which tape the latest bootstrap is located in and then we can perform disaster recovery quickly. On the contrary, if we do not have the bootstrap report, we cannot quickly get an idea which tape the latest bootstrap is located in and we may probably have to scan all tapes to locate the bootstrap. It could be very complicated and time-consuming.

Therefore, it is suggested that we take good care of the bootstrap report. If it is configured to print the report, it is recommended to store the printed bootstrap with the tapes. In this way, when we need to perform disaster recovery for NetWorker Server, it is convenient for us to obtain the tapes and the printed bootstrap at the same. If it is configured to send reports to a mailbox, it is recommended to send reports to an external mailbox, such as gmail. When we need to recover NetWorker Server, even if the internal network crashes, we can still obtain the electronic version of bootstrap.

In addition, the Action line of the Bootstrap notification can be modified (by default, it is configured to send emails to the Administrator or root user of NetWorker Server). We can change it to send emails to other users, print reports or not send emails (by deleting the contents in the Operation line). However, the Action line of the Bootstrap Backup Failure notification cannot be modified (If we modify it and click OK, a prompt will appear saying the action attribute cannot be modified). Once the bootstrap backup fails, NetWorker needs to inform the administrator immediately.
