Avamar 7.0 introduced Dynamic Policies which allowed backup administrators to apply backup policies to ESXi Hosts, Clusters and Folders. I created a guide on how to create and manage this feature in my previous blog post: Avamar 7 Dynamic Policies: A How-To. Avamar 7.1 has some updates worth noting in regard to Dynamic Policies, such as nested folders, and automatic CBT. This update is leveraging Avamar 7.1.0-219 and vSphere 5.5.
I'll be showing Dynamic Policies scoped to folders. Here is how my folder structure is setup in vSphere. I'm using VM and Template Folders:
With this folder structure, let's move to Avamar and see what is going on there. These steps are exactly the same in Avamar 7.0 as in in Avamar 7.1. I'm selecting VC01.vlab.local in Avamar to add my clients:
This is where some improvements have taken place. Take notice of the folder structure and how it contains nested folders:
Avamar 7.1 allows the addition of adding nested folders into a Dynamic Policy. Add the folders in the same way as you would in Avamar 7.0 and make your selections to the right:
Here is the nested folder (Sub Folder) successfully being added:
In Avamar 7.0 we were able to go to the Policy window in Avamar and adjust the settings on the folder from an Avamar perspective. A new setting has been added:
This is a pretty handy feature as now you do not have to administer any CBT settings with VMs utilizing a Dynamic Policy. Any other updates or noteworthy features I'll post here in the future. Thanks!
