VMAX All Flash

Issue:

Hypermax OS:  5977
    Product:  VMAX3 All Flash
Error Code :  7F72.04 (VP-DME: Drain finished with allocations on tdat)
Error Code :  7F75.2D (VP-DCE: TDAT conversion drain failed)
Error Code :  7F72.01 (VP-DCE: TDAT conversion drain complete)

Cause:

In a VMAX3 All Flash Array with compression enabled, CPR will convert TDATs from one track size to another by draining, deleting and re-adding on demand.
The 7F72.04 and 7F75.2D error indicates a failure to drain a TDAT.  The cause of the TDAT drain failure is still undetermined, however one suspicion is that an online code load can force a draining task to abort.

Resolution:

Attach to the 7F75.2D/7F72.04 errors and issue an E5 to obtain the TDAT that failed to drain.
Outputs should look similar to the following:

    7F72.01

Description:  VP-DCE: TDAT conversion drain complete Special buffer:
      TDAT: FFFE8, tgt ratio: a

    7F75.2D
Description:  VP-DCE: TDAT conversion drain failed Special buffer:
      TDAT: FFFE8, tgt ratio: a
      drain_success: 0
      move_result  : 0
      ms_status    : 0

Issue 80,FAST,CPR,REQ to show a log of all CPR activity and look for entries associated with your TDAT:
    User-added image

In the above example, you can see TDAT FFFE8 had failed the drain twice, however the last attempt was successful.

    Action Plan

  1.         If the drain of the same TDAT restarted and finished - this can be considered recovered.
  2.
  3.         If the drain of the same TDAT continues to fail,

    •             Issue the 8D,,,TASK,DRAN,,14 to show the details of all the drain tasks
    •
    •             Review the array for any events at the time of the dran failure  e.g.  code loads, config changes.
    •
    •             If there are no reason for the failure, escalate the case to FAST engineering further investigation
    •
