NetWorker is a back-end solution which works predominantly on a computer network. Data from a production server will be backed up to NetWorker server over the network.
Any problem with the network may break the backup, cloning or recovery job. The NetWorker Troubleshooting Tool (NTT Tool) has been developed to help NetWorker users identify any potential network problem which may affect NetWorker functionality. This KB Article explains the NTT components and provides a brief overview of it.
NetWorker Troubleshooting Tool, the GUI overview:
This version of NTT support NetWorker 8.2.x, 9.x, and 2018.x releases. Network Troubleshooting Tool (NTT) is a simple and easy to use the tool (GUI driven) and it is expected to greatly help our customers and partners in reducing the time taken to install and configure NetWorker server.
Supported OS platforms:
- Windows 64bit (Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10, server platform 2008R2, 2012, 2016)
- Linux 64bit (RHEL7, CentOS ver.7)
- The NTT do not support NetWorker NVE since this is under SLES and no GUI. (Workaround: to run NTT on a NW storage node or client)
- NOTE: the next version of NTT 1.0.7+ will have support for SLES Linux distribution.
NetWorker Troubleshooting Tool installer incorporates 3 tools into one GUI interface. Following sections explain these tools in detail
Network Validation Tool (NVT) for NetWorker - (Testing network connectivity of a NetWorker Datazone).
NSRPCHK - NetWorker Proactive check tool - (Provides configuration resource overview, it report most common NetWorker problems and warnings from logs).
NSRGET - (Provides log gathering and reporting for issues. Also include a device probe utility for tape).
Network Validation Tool for NetWorker (NVT) initiates series of tests on the network to check connectivity among various computer systems where NetWorker is going to be installed or where NetWorker is already running. User need to input details of the hosts to be validated. In an existing NetWorker environment tool can read NetWorker installed hosts information from NetWorker DB and populate in tool’s UI. If the user wanted to test environment before installing NetWorker, hosts details need to enter on Tool’s UI manually. DNS and NTP server details also need to be entered into the tool. After entering input details a user can initiate validation. At the end of validation, a summary table will be displayed with success or failure message against each test ran by the tool. From the validation summary, the user can identify any existing network related issues which will affect NetWorker backup. The user can take action to rectify network problems.
The NVT validations are:
- Host availability on the network
- DNS resolution (forward and reverse lookup)
- Network Time Protocol (NTP) access
- The 'nsrrpcinfo' test to all nodes in the data zone
NetWorker server proactive check tool version 1.3 is command-line diagnostic binary made by EMC Field support resources for EMC support resources or partners with the main objective:
Report very brief NetWorker configuration information (the NSRDB)
Search for most common NetWorker server problems in Media DB, Client file index, daemon log area.
To automate the time-intensive review of EMC Networker logs.
Report possible Operating System tuning configuration based on NetWorker best practice guide.
Collect and package NetWorker logs, configuration, and environment data. This utility provides a series of NetWorker- and host-specific data collection commands and bundles them for EMC Support use. It also includes EMC-standard EMC reports & EMCGrab utilities to collect the standard data required for EMC eLab analysis.
