The asktime fails on Avamar with ntp version 4.2.8p8

Issue:

 

 

The asktime fails with error on the Gen4T system.   
    The ntpq is unable to read the status of the ntp daemon.   
   
    For Example:   
   
    root@avamar:~/#: ntpq -p     
      localhost.localdomain: timed out, nothing received     
      ***Request timed out 
                                                           

 

 

Cause:

 

 

The new ntp version 4.2.8p8 requires the -4 and -6 qualifiers to force DNS resolution to the IPv4 or IPv6 namespace, while the default version of /etc/ntp.conf that is generated by asktime script does not contain the qualifiers. The latest OS Security Rollups update the ntp on Avamar grids and that breaks ipv6 compatibility.                                                           

 

 

Resolution:

 

 

Perform the below steps:   

         
  1.         Login to the affected node as root user     
  2.      
  3.         Stop the ntp daemon     
  4.    
   
      rcntp stop   
   
         
  1.         Edit /etc/ntp.conf file using vi and perform the following changes:                
               
    1.             change the following line         
    2.        
                  
  2.    
   
      restrict        default         ignore   
   
      to   
   
      restrict -6       default         ignore   
   
         
  1.         add an extra line in "Local machine restrictions" section     
  2.    
   
      restrict -6 ::1   
   
         
  1.         Save the changes     
  2.      
  3.         Restart the ntp daemon     
  4.    
   
      rcntp start   
   
         
  1.         Confirm the peers are now being reported as expected.     
  2.    
   
      ntpq -pn     
     
      Sample output:     
      root@avamar:~/#: ntpq -pn
