SQL backup failing with error "BACKUP DATABASE permission denied in database"

Environment:

Avamar SQL Plugin

Microsoft SQL server

Description:

The SQL client backup fails with following error messages in the log:

 

<date and time> avsql Error <9072>: sqlconnectimpl_smo::execute Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ExecutionFailureException: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: BACKUP DATABASE permission denied in database 'OperationsManager'.

<date and time> avsql Error <6478>: VDS::Getconfig failed with 'The api was waiting and the timeout interval had elapsed' (Log #10)

<date and time> avsql Error <6479>: Timed out. Was Microsoft SQLServer running? (Log #10)

<date and time> avtar Info <7202>: Backup CANCELLED, wrapping-up session with Server (Log #2)

 

Resolution:

Open SQL Server Management studio and make sure that the Backup Agent service account (either local SYSTEM or a dedicated backup account) reported in the backup log is added to SQL SERVER ROLE "sysadmin."

 

  1. Start SQL Server Management Studio
  2. Expand tree to Security folder of the required SQL Server
  3. Click Logins to display the users
  4. Right-click the Account and then select Properties
  5. Select the Server Roles page
  6. In the Server roles box, make sure that that sysadmin is checked.
