StorageReview on the VNXe3200 and DD2200

StorageReview’s Brian Beeler and Kevin O’Brien are different than your average reviewers/analysts in that they do not accept payment for their standard review services.  They get the equipment and write the facts.   And in this case, the facts are very good.   Of note: “EMC is not historically a brand associated with low-cost systems …. The economics around the VNXe3200 completely change this perception though…. EMC channel partners will also be thrilled to have a great option for the smaller deployment end of their portfolio.“

EMC Redefines Video Surveillance

Today EMC reinforced its ongoing commitment to the physical security market with an announcement includes new products purpose-built and priced for the video surveillance market, new partnerships (Distributors/VMS), an incremental investment in test/validation lab resources to help with VMS certifications/sizing guides and reference architecture.

The Video Surveillance Equipment market is conservatively forecasted to grow to approximately $19.4 billion in 2016 - representing a CAGR of 12.6%. Within this market, enterprise storage (internal and external storage) is projected to experience the highest growth over the four-year period. EMC video surveillance storage solutions are poised to play a significant role in this growth.

Integral to the announcement is the new VNX-VSS100 storage array, based on VNX technology, that’s purpose-built for highly distributed video surveillance environments – or the Edge – complementing Isilon solutions at the Core. The block-only VNX-VSS100 with FC and iSCSI protocol options will provide aggressively priced capacity options, high bandwidth to support 100’s of cameras at multiple bit rates, and integrations with leading Video Management Software Providers – and it’s available TODAY to order in CxP. The announcement also included news about increased investments in EMC Video Surveillance Labs, additional support and validations with Video Management Software Providers, and expanded strategic partnerships to address important video surveillance trends occurring in the market today.

Customer Blogs About VNX and other EMC Technology Being Drivers For Business Growth

Find out how one company was able to integrate acquisitions and get products out more quickly with EMC

Jim Olevano, Principal Architect for RegEd, a provider of professional licensing and compliance management solutions, has written a blog on how VNX and other EMC technology has been a driver for business growth.

“Since overhauling our infrastructure with EMC, we’ve seen a 60% increase year-over-year in customer workloads. Because of the intelligence in the VNX and its ability to almost real-time adjust to changes in workload we were able to absorb this increase with little to no effort. This proved the VNX platform was a truly scalable enterprise grade technology.”

VNX2 and SVC

Channel Partners please note that while the previous generation VNX is on the IBM SVC support matrix, the VNX2 is not included at this time. We are working with IBM to add VNX2.

We know that FAST VP and FAST Cache both work well behind SVC and there are numerous customers successfully using VNX behind SVC.  Also be aware that IBM SVC does not support thin LUNs, which are required for VNX deduplication. This is an SVC limitation, not a VNX disadvantage. VPLEX does support thin LUNs, however, making it a cost-effective solution for your customers and a compelling reason to position VPLEX over SVC. VNX with VPLEX has huge momentum and the VNX-CA provides an easy way for your customers to acquire this solution.

September 20, 2013EMC Storage Analytics (ESA)

EMC's Storage Analytics (ESA) contiues to take the market by storm as channel partners are deliver this solution to their EMC and VMware customers to help them proactively and intelligently improve storage uptime with deep visibility into the dynamic dependencies between virtual machines, workloads, and storage arrays. Here's the Enterprise Strategy Group Paper - 'From Reporting to Analytics: What Every Storage Administrator Needs to Know' and their Blog - 'Analyze This' to support your selling efforts and provide to your customers.

And yes. EMC Storage Analytics 2.0 does support the next-generation VNX systems that was just announced on September 4.

"The solution provides increased visibility from the virtual server layer down to the VNX storage layer and gives our administrators health information for our virtual and storage resources.  This helps us quickly troubleshoot performance abnormalities and immediately remediate errors.“

Systems Engineer, Milcobel

What is the Storage Analytics solution?

Storage Analytics combines a storage-centric OEM version of VMware's vCenter Operations Manager with an EMC storage adapter (unique per platform) to provide storage analytics and topology mapping in VMware environments. It provides valuable analytics on EMC storage through dashboards, alerts, heat maps, and other visual tools. Leveraging patented analytics technology, Storage Analytics can also self-learn normal operations in an environment and then provide alerts when it sees things starting to operate outside normal boundaries. This provides the customer with preemptive analytics to fix issues before they impact user operations. Storage Analytics also provides object-level topology mapping across a virtualized environment so the user can see dependencies and quickly establish root-cause analysis.

Announcing the VNX-CA for Continuous Availability

The new Next Generation VNX solution includes VPLEX technology, allowing EMC Channel Partners to compete more aggressively against mid-tier multi-controller vendors and have differentiated conversations in all of your VNX opportunities.

On September 4, EMC announced the new flash-optimized VNX series with industry leading price/performance. EMC also announced the new VNX-CA, a powerful new addition to the VNX family. The VNX-CA has been designed specifically for mid-tier environments where non-disruptive availability and scale are a customer requirement. The VNX-CA delivers competitive advantage against multi-controller products as well as dual-controller solutions from a variety of vendors. The VNX-CA delivers VNX capabilities coupled with VPLEX continuous availability benefits (scalable performance and capacity), but goes beyond the competition with the unique ability to extend these functionalities both locally and over distance. Today, many VPLEX deployments globally already have VNX arrays behind them, so this new VNX-CA solution is well suited for mid-tier environments and will enable EMC Channel Partners to take more market share.
