Best Practices for using Dashboard XChange

Below are some suggested best practices for using Dashboard XChange. As a user of ESA Dashboard XChange, we expect you to follow these practices and and help make learning and sharing easy and productive for all users.

  • If you are new to EMC Storage Analytics (ESA) we suggest you to get familiar with the product via alternate resources. ESA Dashboard XChange will be helpful if you are familiar with the product and the concept of dashboards in context of the product.
  • If you are new to EMC Community Network or ESA Dashboard XChange, we suggest you go through Getting Started material on the main page. Resources listed there will introduce you to basics of using ECN and building custom dashboards in ESA. It will also introduce you to best practices for building portable dashboards that can be shared with other users.
  • Dashboards
    • Sharing: If you have a dashboard that you want to share:
      • Pick an appropriate place to share your dashboard. Dashboards for Unified VNX arrays or legacy CX and NS arrays must be shared on Unified Storage Dashboard XChange. Dashboards for VMAX and VPLEX must be posted on VMAX and VPLEX Dashboard XChange respectively.
      • To post/share, Write a Document (DO NOT simply upload your exported dashboard using 'Upload a File')
        • Describe, in enough relevant detail, the use case the dashboards is designed to serve.
        • List any pre-requisites that target environments must meet. This should generally not be the case since dashboards cease to be portable if they have to meet specific pre-requisites. But we understand that 'very useful' dashboards may have some pre-requisites. Pre-requisites may include:
          • Certain super metrics dashboards is using. In these cases either describe the process of creating a super metric or export the super metric and include it with dashboard.
          • Certain custom groups that the dashboard relies on.
        • If you have a long list of pre-requisite with excruciating details on how to meet those, we suggest that you put them in an attachment.
        • Insert/attach any screen shots to help users realize what your dashboard is supposed to look like.
        • Attach your dashboard (in XML format). If you have previous versions of ESA or version of vCenter Operations Manager prior to 5.7 then you may attach the dashboard in binary format (.bin file)
        • Pick an appropriate dashboard exchange category for your document to be listed under. This will make it easier for people to find your dashboard.
      • Make sure you turn on Comments to allow other users to provide feedback on your posting.
      • You may look at some of dashboards that are currently shared to get ideas on how to post.
      • Note: Before sharing your dashboard it is recommended that you also test your dashboard by importing it into an ESA installation different from the one you used to build the dashboard. We understand that you may not always have access to another ESA installation.
    • Downloading: If you want to use a dashboard shared by other people:
      • Make sure you read and understand the specific use case the dashboard you are interested in claims to serve.
      • You must meet pre-requisites, if any, associated with the dashboard.
      • After trying the dashboard:
        • If you have further questions regarding installation, you may ask them in Comments section or contact the user directly.
        • If the dashboard worked for you and has made your life easier, it is professional to come back to the page and show your appreciation through comments.
        • If you have feedback that can help improve usefulness of the dashboard, by all means go ahead and make suggestions.
      • If you decided to improve upon/extend the dashboard you downloaded, we encourage you to share it back with the community.
  • Discussions/Polls
    • Please keep any discussions/polls relevant to Dashboard XChange or ESA in general.
  • Questions
    • Needless to say, you must keep questions relevant to the content appropriate for Dashboard XChange. We will love to make this community a place to get answers to why your cat is experiencing mood swings but it is very unlikely that you will find cat experts in this community. You have a high chance of finding Dashboard experts here.
