A Competitive ESG Look at Dell EMC vs a Leading NAS Appliance
Part 2 - Overall Efficiency
Earlier this week I wrote about how Dell EMC Data Domain Boost (DD Boost) and ProtectPoint technology performed above and beyond a leading NAS appliance when it came to backup and recovery. ProtectPoint provided 8x faster backup and 10.5x faster recovery than the NAS appliance in the same test environment. As a recap, based on research done by ESG from their annual IT spending intentions survey, IT professionals say improving backup, recovery and managing data growth are among their top priorities. As extended outages mean lost revenue and productively, many organizations are having a difficult time finding the best option for protecting their mission and business critical database environments.
In this second blog in the two part series, I will be reviewing the overall efficiency of our Dell EMC solutions compared to a traditional NAS appliance. Specifically I’ll be covering host, storage and network efficiency.
To set the stage, ESG tested Dell EMC Data Domain Boost and ProtectPoint Technology compared to a NAS appliance. DD Boost is a software option that can be purchased with a Data Domain system, and ProtectPoint technology is available through the Data Protection Suite Family. ProtectPoint is a data protection solution that integrates primary storage, VMAX All Flash and XtremIO with Data Domain protection storage. This Dell EMC solution is designed to accelerate backup and recovery, help organizations meet application protection SLAs, and minimize backup impact on applications, all while reducing cost and complexity.
Host, Storage and Network Efficiency
The ESG Lab, along with testing backup and recovery, also reviewed the overall efficiency of ProtectPoint technology and Data Domain Boost. In this first section on efficiency I’ll review host impact, which is determined by how large the CPU load is during a backup. To sum up the above graph, not only does ProtectPoint technology offer a significantly shorter backup time, it also offers the lowest CPU usage at just 15.6%. This is a great improvement over the NAS appliance CPU usage of almost 50% during its backup time.
Below, the leading NAS backup appliance utilizes local compression, and reached an unimpressive 3% reduction over the entire 15 days of backups. On the opposite end of this, Dell EMC’s Data Domain uses global deduplication, which reduced data by 93%. With ProtectPoint data reduction that percentage increased to 94%.
Last, and certainly not least, network load was examined. Dell EMC DD Boost and ProtectPoint technology significantly reduced data transferred during backup operations. As shown below, ProtectPoint was also able to drastically reduce data transfer during recovery – those bars are almost non-existent in comparison! This occurs because ProtectPoint technology leverages change blog tracking, which sends only unique blocks over to primary storage. This results in ProtectPoint sending no data across the host network adapters and only minimal data through the SAN from Primary to Protection Storage. Recovery is no different, as ProtectPoint recovers only the blocks that have been changed. With DD Boost, only unique data is sent across the host network adapters, which results in the significant reduction to the network load during backup. The traditional NAS appliance, however, must send all the data across the host network adapters during a backup and restore 100% of the data during a recovery making it not nearly as efficient as the Dell EMC solution.
In this blog series we’ve walked through the superior backup and recovery performance of Dell EMC Data Domain Boost and ProtectPoint technology, and how it provides IT leads and professionals with solutions that help them meet even their strictest SLA requirements.
