As promised, this is the follow-up to my earlier Oracle Focused Sessions at EMC World 2014 blog post.
Despite the title, this time I want to look at additional Oracle sessions of interest at EMC World 2014, and also examine complementary sessions that should give Oracle folks some extra background to what EMC is doing with respect to Hybrid Cloud and answer the question "What is the 3rd Platform?".
EMC welcomes Oracle Corporation to EMC World 2014! I don’t know if this is a first, but it feels that way, we get the chance ‘on our own turf’ to directly ask Oracle’s own specialists about their collaboration with EMC products and solutions – can’t wait to spend time with them, for sure there will be discussions around VMware certification and EMC storage integration with Oracle Enterprise Manager, maybe they will ask VCE about running Oracle Linux on Vblock!
On Wednesday, I will first be refreshing my knowledge with a VMware vSphere session on virtualizing Oracle databases, then attending the Oracle VM for Cloud Infrastructure session – both sessions are detailed below, should be very interesting:
This session walks through a detailed architecture review of optimizing Oracle databases on vSphere 5 with EMC storage platforms and review tested, proven solutions and reference architectures involving EMC, vSphere and Oracle RAC in detail. This session also reviews best practices for monitoring virtualized Oracle databases and EMC storage using vCenter Operations Manager.
Monday, May 5, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM Wednesday, May 7, 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
EMC and Oracle have partnered since 1995. Through our partnership we have integrated EMC infrastructure with Oracle Linux and Oracle VM to accelerate deployment of cloud infrastructures, Oracle Database and Oracle applications using Oracle VM Templates. Learn more on how we help thousands of customers accelerate and simplify cloud infrastructure deployment.
Wednesday, May 7, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
To get a broad view of the flexibility and potential of VCE Vblock systems, I plan to attend the following two sessions, first seeing how EMC’s Unified Infrastructure Manager (UIM) can be used to accelerate cloud infrastructure provisioning and the second looking at integrated and comprehensive Vblock Data Protection with EMC solutions;
This session discusses EMC Unified Infrastructure Manager (UIM), what’s new, gain insight into an existing customer implementation and learn about upcoming integration with EMC ViPR. With EMC UIM, EMC VSPEX and VCE Vblock System physical components (compute, storage and network) are abstracted, then transformed into large, virtual pools, ready to be grouped into “services” and made ready for virtual applications via policy-based, automated provisioning. ..., delivering a foundation for the Software-Defined Data Center and bridging the gap to the 3rd platform of IT.
Monday, May 5, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 7, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Been on the chopping block for missing RTOs/RPOs/SLAs in your virtualized environment? Then you know it’s important to have a data protection architecture that’s intentional, not accidental. Learn why integrated 3-tier data protection with Avamar, Data Domain, RecoverPoint, and VPLEX provides comprehensive Vblock Data Protection and Mobility across all major applications. Don’t get chopped stay calm and converge on.
Tuesday, May 6, 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM Thursday, May 8, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Attending conferences is an opportunity to explore technologies that you perhaps don’t normally work with or would like to understand more about, for me that’s going to be these two sessions discussing how EMC’s ScaleIO and Isilon products can be used to provide enterprise-class infrastructure to application and database environments, whilst reducing cost and complexity:
EMC ScaleIO is enabling-software for converged infrastructure. The power and flexibility of ScaleIO is quickly appreciated in database use cases. The reality of hyper-grade, enterprise-class infrastructure with commodity components has never been more realistic than it is with ScaleIO. This session covers architecture and performance characterization of an 8-node Oracle Real Applications Clusters configuration based on ScaleIO. Come learn how ScaleIO unifies industry-leading compute, storage and application software with commodity-level economics while offering fantastic space/power and cooling attributes.
Monday, May 5, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 7, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Learn how a big companies can take cost and complexity out of their SAP landscape by standardizing on EMC VNX and Isilon. Discover how the customer discovers, moves, and assembles structured and unstructured data between platforms, applications, and databases. This lecture also walks through how the VNX enables migrations of databases and applications without downtime.
Monday, May 5, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM Thursday, May 8, 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM
Users of EMC’s Replication Manager for data protection management will want to attend one or both of these sessions on EMC’s application protection portfolio with AppSync providing leading edge protection and data availability for your mission critical applications:
Ask EMC experts and discuss with other EMC customers about data protection solutions for specific applications like Oracle, Exchange and SQL. Learn how AppSync provides a simple, SLA-driven and self-service approach to data protection. Do you currently have EMC Replication Manager deployed and want to learn more about EMC AppSync? Get the facts and best practices on planning your transition to AppSync, EMC's newest data protection/replica management solution.
Wednesday, May 7, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Attend this session to learn what’s new in EMC’s application protection portfolio with AppSync providing leading edge protection and data availability for your mission critical applications. This session explains the latest advances in protecting and repurposing your Oracle environment, critical Microsoft applications, including Exchange and SQL Server, File Systems and VMware datastores across EMC VMAX and VNX arrays. AppSync manages EMC replication technologies such as VNX Advanced Snapshots, TimeFinder, SRDF, Rep V2, SnapSure and RecoverPoint, and provides users with a simple, SLA-driven, and self-service approach to meet their business RPOs and RTOs. This session is a must attend if you are an EMC Replication Manager user and are considering making the move to AppSync.
Tuesday, May 6, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM Thursday, May 8, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Lastly, I have only seen EMC’s Brian Gallagher on video, so I plan to see him in person at EMC World 2014 and attend his special session on redefining IT, and developing an effective hybrid cloud strategy. Not specific to Oracle solutions, but likely to be very interesting:
Hybrid clouds are redefining IT, and developing an effective hybrid cloud strategy has become a top priority. Choosing the right technologies and operational models are critical to success. Learn how organizations are leveraging VMAX and VNX in their well-run hybrid clouds today— and how they are redefining infrastructure to make enterprise applications run better while enabling trusted next generation application deployments.
Monday, May 5, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Of course there is much more exciting stuff to see at EMC World 2014, there will be fun, surprises, breaking news and we can expect many product announcements. I will be in attendance and providing fresh blogs on the EMC Oracle Community, Tweeting live from sessions, and sharing anything that might be of interest from my Twitter handle @DBAStorage.
If you are attending EMC World 2014, come visit the Oracle Kiosk in the Solutions Pavilion and follow us on Twitter @EMCOracle. It's going to be an amazing week in Las Vegas, I look forward to meeting as many EMC Community Network members as possible.
